  • We use the word differently. In the past I think we used it more as you do, because “going to town” had the connotations of going to a big city.

“Town” in American usage can mean anything from a small urban center (like under 10k people) to an incorporated municipality that has only a post office and tons of farms around it.

Basically we don’t say “village” here. So town is the smallest word we have. But it has a big range.

  • Neither the main tab nor subscriptions really gives me what I want. The main tab is good - I do discover good things there. I’m not one of those people who says “just give me my subscriptions in chronological order.” Because that actually sucks, and that’s kinda what you get on the subscription tab.

I want a smart algorithm, I just want it to pay more respect to my subscriptions and show more of them more often. “Home” gives you some but not enough.

  • I use YT daily, heavily.

It’s pretty well known that their feed is optimized for engagement above all else. They will show you videos they think you’ll like and NOT show you a new video from a channel you’re subscribed to.

    It’s called an “algorithm.”

It’s so extreme at times that you can even not know that you’re subscribed to a channel, because you never see them.

This is what I mean by not respecting subscriptions. There’s no stronger explicit signal I can give YT when I want to see more of a creator. But they ignore that and decide for me what I’ll like.

  • Me: “Sam O… haha cute name. I’ve never heard of it. I’ll see if they have a YT channel. Oh they do! What?! I’m already subscribed??!”

I wish YT actually respected subscriptions. Here I am subscribed to someone and I’ve so thoroughly forgotten it that their name doesn’t even ring a bell.

  • Stargate SG-1 is a great example where no matter what the magic is, it’s eventually revealed to be technology underneath - just really advanced technology. If you take all limits off science, it’s easy for the two to begin blending. They even do the “only available to some people” thing as technology: certain people share a gene with the ancient ancestors who made the high-technology, and so it recognizes and activates for them and not others.

  • Didn't i just explain to you my thought process?

Insufficiently, I guess because I did not follow.

Smartphones are made with cheap third world labor. Everyone in the US has one, even those of us supposedly getting so exploited by capitalism. Therefore, the smartphone is like a membership card in the “capitalist exploiters” club. Which I was saying we all belong to.

  • I’m a skeptic on this as well but wow you completely dismissed the entire question of loss of cultural diversity and that is a little too far for me. I think you may also be ignoring that humans are built to speak 3-4 languages without strain, and so having just one is unnecessary, and for people to have alternates is not necessarily harmful.

  • Where did I say most phones can never be fairly or sustainably produced? It’s almost like you’re replying to the wrong comment, because I never said I can’t imagine miners being well paid.

I happen to agree with the points you made. I was just describing the current conditions. I think that people at the lower end of the American economy believe they’re getting screwed by capitalism, when they don’t actually know what screwed is, or how they too are complicit in the same exploitation they cry out against, just with invisible foreign workers.

If we’re going to move beyond capitalism, we need to understand what we stand to gain and lose. I don’t think most do.

  • Capitalism is all about using other people so that YOU can have an amazing quality of life. And even if you’re at the lower end of the economy in the US or Europe, your standard of living is propped up by third world labor, so really I strongly doubt that anyone here is in a position to say they’d be better off without capitalism. Most of the world, yes. Smartphone owning westerners: get real, colonizers.

  • Maybe so. Views tend to become simpler out at the extremes, and I think we have a lot of young people here who are drawn to simple, direct views. I mean shit I’m drawn to simplicity as well, but once you’ve had to manage things out in the real world, the first thing you realize is how complicated they are.
