  • Yeah it's a terrible feeling giving up a sport bc it's too hard on ya. Like I really love Judo but I just can't throw myself at the floor repeatedly any more. But I might be able to do Aikido or low-contact Karate (or just strength training which is what I chose). The trick is knowing when to move on, and it's a tough decision.

  • Still trying to wrap my head around how a partial ordering plays out here. I think it's fair to say that for any such nonempty spectrum, there exists at least one person about whom it can be said: "nobody is gayer than they are." Right? (even if 1 or more people are equally gay...)

  • they spoke German ... at first seeming far-fetched

It's not that far-fetched bc at the time Transylvania was in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and German was an official language (along with Hungarian and Croatian).

If you look at this map of the A-H Empire and refer to 5 May's reference to the Borgo Pass (now called the Tihuta Pass) I think they're somewhere between Bistriz and Suezcowa on that map in grid I-c. I think they were technically in the Hungarian sphere of influence, but the Hungarians were only co-rulers since 1867 and the Draculas were old nobility so it's not surprising they spoke German from when the Austrians were the sole rulers. This is all kinda obscure now, but Austria-Hungary was a major power back in the 1800s, I mean the Austrians were one of the main allies who took down Napoleon for example, and nobody knew A-H was going to collapse after WW1.

I think English schooling back then included a classical language -- usually Latin? -- as well as a modern language -- often French but German is certainly plausible.
